Cabled Watchcap pattern


SIZE:

Child/ 18 – 20″ head circumference, Adult/ 20 – 23″ head circumference

MATERIALS

  • 100 grams light worsted weight yarn
  • size 7, 8, or 9 16” circular knitting needles
  • cable needle (if required)
  • blunt eye needle

GAUGE

4.5 sts per inch in st st

PATTERN:

  • Cast on 72 (child), 84 (adult) sts on 16” circular needle, be sure not to twist
  • stitches, and to mark the start of the row.
  • Rows 1 – 3: K2, P2 across
  • Row 4: *Sl 1 st to cable needle, K1 st, K st on cable needle, P 2* across
  • Repeat rows 1 – 4 until piece measures 7 (9) inches. Or 5 (7) inches if you prefer a brimless cap.

Decrease crown of hat as follows:

  • R1: *K2, P2, K2, P2 tog.* repeat to end of row
  • R2: *K2, P2, K2, P1* repeat to end of row
  • R3: *K2, P2tog, K2, P1 * repeat to end of row
  • R4: *Sl 1 st to cable needle, K1 st, K st on cable needle, P1* across (54 sts / 60 sts) {slip to doubledpointed needles here}
  • R5: *K2tog, P1, K2tog, P1 * repeat to end of row
  • R6 *K1, P1, K1, P1* repeat to end of row (36 / 42)
  • R7: *K2tog* across row (18 / 21)
  • R8: *K2tog * across row (9 / 11)
  • Sew through the remaining sts on the needle to close the top. For added
  • strength thread through a second time. Pull tight (and knot). [Sew seam if necessary ( if hat was knitted on straight needles, or to hide yarn
  • tails).]
